Apple iPhone: Future WIP

Apple certainly had grand plans for the iPhone platform. Powered by a great hardware+software duo the Apple phone is all set to innovate beyond our expectations. Various patents filed by Apple over the years (and recently) gives us a clear idea of what the company is planning. Your dream gadgets are being designed and in great style.

Long back we heard how Apple planned to make stolen iPod’s unusable for thieves. Here the stolen gadget won’t charge up unless authenticated. The technology is not yet implemented but for the moment iPhone 3.0 does offer a GPS based locate option. A series of recent patents give us an idea of what Apple has in mind.

iPods can be deafening if you plug it on full volume for hours, understanding this future Apple media players would have smart volume controls that will recognize how long you have been listening to music and accordingly adjust the volume. Thats not all, a recent filing also revealed an amazing Karaoke feature that will actually work towards improving you singing by giving you live feedback on how you are performing.

And if you feel Karaoke is not geeky enough? How about Fingerprint based controls? No not just authentication and security based on finger prints, but using different fingerprint signatures to launch tasks or events. Thats exactly what another recent patent from Apple suggests.

For users like me who avoid the iPhone solely for the lack of a physical keyboard, Apple actually has plans to include tactile feedback on its multi-touch screen. I would really be interested in seeing if Apple can convince physical QWERTY addicts to use a touchscreen keyboard with this technology (something Blackberry Storm failed at).

Along with all the geeky touchscreen mods and fingerprint functions, Apple also has a patent to extend the capabilities of its accelerometer. Apparently one of the patents that Apple filed recently hinted towards movement gestures. While I am not 100% clear on how this would be used, I feel it would allow you to trigger programs and operate applications using certain gestures like the shake to change music we see in iPhone 3GS.

And if even that fails to impress you, get ready for biometric security on your Apple gadgets. How about a retina scanner behind your computers LCD? Fingerprint scanners under your keyboard keys? Such that you won’t be distracted with the authentication, though it will be working all the time ….

These are few of the killer ideas that Apple has been playing with. With this hint of how they plan to build our future iPods and iPhones, we can certainly sense the sci-fi life that we are about to lead in Future … (work in progress)
