Researchers develop "invisible flash" for night photography

Researchers at US have developed a “dark” flash. The new technology would help take clear pictures even in the dark without the need of a flash light. Which means your pictures would no longer come with your eyes closed due to the bright flash of the camera.

The invisible flash developed by these researchers uses infrared and ultraviolet waves to take pictures in the dark. The camera named “Dark Flash Camera” has been developed by Dilip Krishnan and Rob Fergus of New York University. The science involved is the modification in the flash bulb. The flash bulb of “Dark Flash Camera” emits light of a wide range of frequencies. The visible rays are then filtered out which gives the “Dark” flash.

The two step process involves taking two consecutive pics and superimposing them. The first picture uses the dark flash and takes an infrared picture as on the left in the top picture. Immediately after that a second picture is taken without the dark flash. The color information from the second picture is superimposed on the first one to get a clearer picture as shown on the right side.

The innovation looks fantastic. What we really hope here is to implement it in the existing digicams and camera phones. A dedicated new camera for the technology does not sound a big hit (for now).
