PlayStation 3 firmware 3.0 now available

Right on schedule, PlayStation 3 firmware 3.0 is now out and being fed directly into your console (should you opt to download it, at least), offering a number of changes to the user interface and Trophies section and animated themes with avatars. Be sure to come back and let us know what you think!

Update: We’re running the update now and the feature list that shows up the PS3 has two new features we hadn’t heard about in the past: simultaneous audio output across connectors, and control of video playback (slow motion, fast forward and rewind) using the right stick. Nice!

Netbook sales growth doubles laptops in Q2 '09

While it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise given the fairly steady growth netbooks have seen since their inception as a product category, it’s still pretty notable that they’ve apparently now managed to nearly double traditional laptops in sales growth during the second quarter of this year. That word comes from market research firm DisplaySearch, which found that netbook shipments grew an impressive 40% compared to the same quarter last year, as opposed to 22% for plain old laptops. As excitingly illustrated in the chart above, however, that still leaves netbooks (or “mini-notes”) well behind laptops in terms of total shipments, although that seems almost certain to narrow considerably in the months and years ahead — at least until the line between netbooks and laptops becomes so blurred that we just start calling everything “laptops” again.

Nikon D300s unboxing and hands-on

Nikon’s D300s has been filtering out to select retail locations for a few days now, and judging by the box that just arrived on our doorstep, we’d say Nikon (just barely) kept its promise of having these things out by the end of August. The semi-pro body is significantly more sturdy and somewhat heavier than our in-house D90, though the rear LCD sure looks awfully similar. We’re planning on giving the 12.3 megapixel CMOS sensor and 720p movie mode a go, but for now, feel free to peruse the gallery below to see exactly what a penny under $1,800 gets you in the DSLR world these days.

Video: Tech21's iBand protective case and its mystical magical non-Newtonian goo

If you’re the clumsy sort you have absolutely no shortage of protective cases and coatings to shroud your pricey gadget in, but most are ugly, bulky, and likely ineffective. The iBand from Tech21 isn’t particularly attractive nor svelte, but after watching the video below there’s little doubt about its effectiveness. It’s made of a substance called d3o, which is a fancy orange non-Newtonian substance, starting out stretchy and gushy but, when put under pressure, hardening and protecting its precious contents. We’ve seen this stuff applied to high-impact applications like motorcycle armor, but we’re glad to see gadgetry getting a little attention too. The video is a bit curious as it appears that the d3o is just applied around the edges of the case and yet the enclosed device survives a face-down landing, but it’s an impressive demonstration nevertheless. Right now the £15 ($25) iBand is only available for the iPhone and iPod Touch, but future gadgets should receive the oobleck treatment soon.

Xtreamer e-TRAYz NAS boasts up to 4TB storage, artistic license with English language

Loving your Xtreamer media player? The company’s gearing up for a much larger, more versatile NAS complement that supports up to 4TB of storage across two bays, and anyone who’s purchased last year’s model by November 1st will get a chance to pre-order this one for €59 (US $84) when the listing opens on that day. It’s bring-your-own-disk drives, but otherwise you’re getting a Windows 7 / Snow Leopard-compliant server that supports RAID 0 / 1, torrent management, 802.11n (with dongle), and a surveillance webcam for remote snooping that’s due out by Christmas of this year. After November 1st the price jumps to €99, and those who don’t have the current Xtreamer will have to pick up both as a €198 set. No ship date yet, but we’re supposed to be hearing more details, including full specs, in the coming days.

Video: Creative Zii EGG development kit gets a second look

We already know the Creative Zii EGG development edition is shipping out to eager hands, but for the even more eager eyes out there, the folks at Anything But iPod managed some pretty nice, well-lit HD video to give another illustration of how the hardware will look and feel. The narrator is quick on multiple occasions to remind viewers it’s an early build running on Creative’s Plazma OS only (no Android yet) and he takes issue with the feel of the thin film of plastic on the touchscreen, but that and slow load times notwithstanding, the device is looking mighty impressive. Pictures through the read link, and mosey on past the break for digital peep show.

[Thanks, Mathieu]

LG's 15-inch OLED TV on sale in Korea this November, overseas in 2010

LG's 15-inch OLED TV on sale in Korea this November, overseas in 2010

LG bared the fruits of its OLED labor last week with a new set of photos of its gorgeous 15-inch screen, and now comes word from Reuters that it’s gearing up to become consumer reality. The company will be showing off the model at next week’s IFA trade show, and then expects to start selling it in Korea this November, followed by overseas sometime next year. Excited? You bet. Affordable? Price unknown, with Sony’s two-year old 11-inch XEL-1 still retailing for $2,500 in the US — and worse elsewhere — you can expect to be sacrificing a pretty penny for small-screen bliss. LG also plans to show off a 40-inch OLED in the “not too distant future,” but don’t expect to be seeing that hit retail shelves for a good long time to come.

Sony R&D explains some background on the PlayStation motion controller

Well, it’s no GameGun, but we hear this “PlayStation motion controller” thing from Sony is going to be “kind of a big deal.” The SCEA R&D team was kind enough to put together some behind the scenes footage detailing a bit of the genesis of the controller and some of its technical prowess, and according to Sony this should be just enough of a calculated tease to get us excited for TGS in late September. We feel so manipulated. Video is after the break.

Grado takes on the earbud with the GR8

Grado takes on the earbud with the GR8

After years of shunning that most common of headphone styles, the earbud, Grado has at last taken a break from its over-the-ear, vented diaphragm purism (if you don’t count the China-built iGrado) and created an in-ear pair for the kiddies. The GR8 doesn’t really look like anything special, but the couple of reviews that have trickled in sound promising. The headphones are being built in Japan, but have some proprietary Grado magic in there to at least make them interesting — and it certainly should, at $300 a pop.

BMW's Vision EfficientDynamics concept won't look a tenth this wild when it hits the streets

We hate concept cars. Year after year we see new concept cars more fantastical and amazing than the last, and year after year we see cars hit the market that have had all the magic ripped out of them by safety regulations and market realities. The newly unveiled Vision EfficientDynamics car from BMW is mainly here to show us BMW’s new diesel-based plug-in hybrid drive system. But it’s also here to annoy us. Video is after the break.

Canon EOS 7D pics and specs leak out

We saw the top, we saw the poster, and now it looks like we’ve got more or less the whole deal: Canon’s EOS 7D has been leaked in (most of) its gory detail. At the heart there’s an 18 megapixel sensor and dual DIGIC 4 processors, which shoots stills at 8 FPS with ISO from 100 to 6400 and a special 12800 ISO mode. The 3-inch LCD has a 920,000 dot resolution, while the viewfinder offers 100% coverage and a built-in digital level. Naturally the camera picks up the HD movie capabilities of the 5D, but no word on how it might expand upon them just yet. All this info has been gleaned from a Chinese forum, so we’re still obviously awaiting on official word from Canon — but if the rapid leakage rate is any indication, it can’t be too far off.

[Thanks, Darko]

Samsung's upcoming WB5000 24x zoomer shoots RAW photos and HD video

Samsung has a new one in the works, the WB5000, presumably offering the price advantages of an 24x zoomin’ all-in-one with some of the features and image quality of a DSLR — that’s the dream, anyway. The camera shoots 12.5 megapixel stills, with full manual controls, face detection and support for RAW formatted images, while also offering HD recording and a relatively compact form factor. True details are scarce, but it sounds promising on the surface. The WB5000 should be out in the fourth quarter, no word on price just yet.

Le Petit Prince roving greenhouse robot is overwhelmingly cute, useful

Something about Le Petit Prince, the mobile, plant-loving greenhouse robot makes us indescribably sad. Is it his one, massive adorable eye? Or merely the fact that he’s named after one of the most depressing books ever written? Either way, we can’t really argue with his usefulness — the concept can carry about plants and care for them, all the while ravaging the terrain for further specimens. He’s also designed to learn about the optimal growing conditions of the plants he collects, which really makes us want one to care for a certain, finicky houseplant we won’t call out by name (but we’re looking at you, Venus Flytrap). Check out the darling video after the break.

Xbox 360 'Super Elite' with 250GB HDD glimpsed in South African retail ad

So much for secrecy. South African Xbox 360 distributor Comztek has told local gaming news site XboxGaming.co.za that the a 250GB “Super Elite” model is due there in October. Additionally, the Forza 3 bundle we saw heading to Germany is also en route to SA, retailing for R4,999 (US $646), or around the same price as the Elite before its recent global price cut. South African retailer BT Games has apparently also posted a flier in honor of the launch, offering a R500 discount on the Super Elite with the trade-in of a slimline PlayStation 2. Let’s hope the folks in Redmond have as much of a sense of humor about leaks as Sony does.

Maemo-based Nokia N900 goes official (Early Review)

maemo n900 main

After numerous leaks and lots of excitement, Nokia has officially announced the N900. The N900 is the first Nokia phone powered by the Maemo OS. Previously we have seen Nokia’s internet tablets like the N800 running the Linux-based Maemo 5, so while Nokia has phased out its internet tablets, devices like the N900 will pack in all the features of an internet tablet as well as a phone. Industry experts believe that Nokia is trying to compete with the Blackberry and the Apple iPhone by using the Linux-powered Maemo.

A look at the Nokia N900 features:

  • 3.5″ Touch Screen
  • 600MHz ARM Cortex-A8 Processor
  • 256MB Ram, 768MB virtual memory – Total 1GB
  • 5MP camera with Flash / WVGA video recording at 25fps
  • 32GB onboard memory
  • OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics acceleration
  • 1320 mAh battery
  • Mozilla-powered browser with Flash 9.4
  • WiFi / Bluetooth / MicroSD slot / Bluetooth AD2p / AGPS

Even without a hands-on, one quickly notices that this device is jam-packed with alot of features. Maemo brings the desktop feature set to your handheld. Looking at the web browser powered by Mozilla technology, the video below demonstrates how you can select text and perform functions just as you would on a desktop. A mouse pointer assists in many of these actions.

Another interesting thing is the image tagging system demonstrated. You can pick tags from a tag cloud for any image, making the tagging process really fast. The 5Mp Carl Zeiss lens and 848×480 video recording is pleasing. But hey the device weighs in at 181gms!

Maemo based Nokia N900

Maemo based Nokia N900

It’s certain that Nokia is looking at options beyond the Symbian platform to compete with the Google-backed Android and Apple’s iPhone, which are currently the most rapidly progressing smartphone platforms in the world. It is already estimated that iPhones and Androids shall sell close to a 100 million units each by 2012, and Nokia certainly wants a bigger share of the smartphone pie by then.

The N900 matches up to the iPhone 3GS and puts up a much better fight than the Nokia N97. However, we are yet to see if this gadget can have as much commercial success as the iPhone has had.

A few things are already troubling me. Aspects like the bulky nature of the device, the bad QWERTY placement that Nokia has recently selected and the overall horsepower. While the iPhone 3GS runs a 600MHz+ processor and 256MB Ram on a mobile OS with OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics, Nokia is doing that now with a desktop-capable OS on the N900. Low memory and a slower processor are some things that hurt the N97 as well IMO. But I can only be certain of how well the Maemo handles once we have a proper hands-on with the N900. Till then we’re excited and itching to have a go at this smartphone… :)

Apart from Symbian and Maemo, Nokia is also associated with the oFono, which is a joint venture with Intel for a mobile OS. Guess Nokia’s approach to the smartphone platform can be considered as either #randomness or #confusion. Hope they get something going soon.Similar Posts:

Bugatti's Vera electric kettle proves that even boiling water can be interesting, pricey

Know what we really love? Tea kettles. The thing is, plenty of them look like there was roughly zero thought put into their design — and we’ve all gotten into the habit of accepting those 3 or 4 basic designs offered to us. No more. Bugatti’s got a wholly new approach to boiling water on the horizon, in the form of the Vera. It’s beautifully designed, it’s got a nice array of electronic timing functions — but the bells and whistles are just icing on this beautiful, delicious cake. The Vera kettle will be available this September, for around $300.

This shouldn’t really come as too much of a surprise, but anyone wanting to enjoy Twitter and Facebook on Xbox Live will have to pony up for Gold member subscription, the same premium prerequisite currently needed for Netflix Instant Watch and pretty much all online gaming. Silver membership will be given a “free trial,” but exactly what limitations that entails, or if they’ll be an option to “upgrade” to the full version, is anyone’s guess.

Amazon Germany, who previously listed the PlayStation 3 Slim a good 20 days before the official debut (it still has the same Amazon Stock Identification Number as it did when leaked), has gone ahead and posted a new Xbox 360 model, ASIN in tow, with a 250GB HDD, two wireless controllers, and Forza Motorsport 3. Price is listed at 247 euros ($397), a good 30 euros over the current Elite price. No release date, but Forza 3 isn’t due out until at least October 23rd so we’d say you got awhile to wait and see if this pans out. Any chance we can get a built-in WiFi router along with that extra storage space?

[Thanks, skipper]

Sony Alpha 850 full-frame DSLR given the hands-on treatment

Sony debuted three fairly high-end cameras earlier today, but there’s no question that the full-frame, 24.6-megapixel Alpha 850 is the flagship of the lot, and sure to garner the most attention (if not necessarily the most purchases). Thankfully, the folks at Pocket-lint have managed to get their hands on the DSLR, and have naturally provided plenty of pics showing it off from every angle (paired with Sony’s 50mm F2.8 Macro lens). Hit up the read link for the complete slide show, and a bit more time to contemplate the $2,000 price tag it’ll be sporting come September.
