Microsoft has tied up with the largest manufacturer of cellphones in the world to bring Office Mobile and other enterprise goodies (Microsoft business communications, collaboration and device management software ) to the symbian platform. These services from Microsoft are currently only for Windows Mobile, as a part of the deal Nokia is also renewing its Microsoft Activesync license. (read the complete press release here)
So Why Nokia? well, here is what the top 10 smartphones in US are (according to sales in Q2 09).
Its pretty clear that Nokia is trying to cement its foot in US and faces tough competition. This makes Android, iPhone and the Blackberry a common enemy for both Microsoft and Nokia. While Nokia looks to strengthen Symbian and target US as a market where its smartphones have failed to dent the competitors marketshare, Microsoft is looking to lure business users who are extremely loyal to the Blackberry.
