The Apple iPhone has been a revolution. The iTouch has changed the way smartphones are thought of, something that has truly empowered the handheld. From killer apps to ground breaking UI, the Apple iPhone has placed itself as the most desired gadget for many. Here is a quick look at the achievements of the Apple iPhone in the past two years.
The force that the iPhone carries was demonstrated first when the Apple Gizmo left behind the legendary MotoRazr in sales. The Motorola V3 which came free with a carrier contract back then was beaten by the iPhone 3G priced at $199. If this was any indication, what came in the following months was just a formality…
2007/2008: The iPhone / iPhone 3G sweeps away some of the most prestigious ‘Gadget of the Year’ awards.
November 2008: iPhone became the most popular mobile gaming device with a 14% marketshare. An average iPhone user downloaded games 10 times more frequently than an average mobile user.
Jan 2009: Apple captures 1% of the global mobile market. Shipping millions of iPhones and making its presence felt in 70 countries with the iPhone 3G.
The App Store numbers started to flow in late 2008 and before the competition could react, the iTunes AppStore had 15000 apps live with 500 million app downloads! Just a month later the figure rose up to 20000+.
February 2009: After giving Safari a 64% usage rise in the browser market, the iPhone went on to become the most popular mobile internet device in the US with a staggering 51% marketshare (the worldwide share went up to 18.3% to take the number 2 spot).
Feb 2009: Rogers the official iPhone carrier in Canada got a huge boost with the iPhone taking a 33% share amongst its smartphone sales.
March 2009: O2 reports 1 million iPhone 3G’s sold in UK. Apple had already surpassed the 10 million mark with iPhone sales. At the same time the App Store made news with 800 million downloads and the USTREAM app getting a million downloads in no time.
March 2009: Reports showed that the iPhone was the most searched mobile phone on the internet and Apple was the most popular brand online.
April 2009: 30000+ Apps on the App Store, 1 Billion downloads reached! Total iPhone sales at 21 million units with 1.5% of the mobile market sales under its belt.
June 2009: It takes Apple just 2 days to sell a million iPhone 3Gs. Steve Jobs returns to Apple after his medical leave. Within weeks of its release the iPhone 3G S video camera spike mobile video uploads on YouTube by 400%!
July 2009: iPhone grabs 49% of mobile internet’s AD market according to ADmob. iPhone 3G 8GB and the 16GB are awarded the title of the most popular smartphones in the Japanese market with both #1 and #2 spot going to Apple. App Store rally continues with 1.5billion downloads and 65000+ apps live!
August 2009: iPhone 3GS takes the no 2 spot in smartphone sales in the US market, behind the Blackberry series. iPhone becomes the most popular camera device for uploads on Flickr! iPhone now has 32% of the Global WiFi market …
… It is being estimated that 80million iPhones would be sold by 2012.
