Hands-on with Nokia N97 Mini and N900

Nokia allowed us to play with the N97 Mini and the N900 today while announcing the launch of the N97 Mini in India. The N97 mini is impressive with the design and sleek look but the pricing isn’t known to us yet. We played with both devices for a few minutes and by far the N900 had us excited for most of those seconds (and its not even launching here anytime soon). The browser on the N900 was something I was looking to explore but it didn’t look like a Mobile Safari killer and I managed to hang it aswell while switching between windows / tabs :(

I also put the question of the weirdly placed spacebar (on the right) on the N97, 97 mini and the N900 to Mr. Jonne Harju, Senior Design Manager, Nokia Design Studio and her revealed that Nokia’s study indicated that its much more comfortable / efficient to have the left thumb pressing the spacebar. Comparing the N97 Mini and the N900, the keyboard on the N900 is far more comfortable. The tiny keys on the N97 mini restricted my speed on the qwerty significantly.

The sad part is that the N97 mini would be promoted much more widely even though the touchscreen and the Maemo OS on the N900 look much better to us. Perhaps Nokia has a reason to wait before they go full-out promoting a Maemo device. Jonne also promised a lot of interesting launches for 2010, though NO specific details all we are told is ‘DIFFERENT’ devices than what we are seeing now. My suggestion of-course a touchscreen with a slidedown qwerty like the Palm Pre :)
