The HP Slate was first shown early this year at CES ‘10. But back then, there was no word on its specs and launch date. Now HP seems to go the Apple way in creating a buzz for it’s product through rumor marketing.
The launch details and major specs of the HP Slate have now been leaked to reputed Spanish publication Clipset. The word is that it’s coming out in June (or September) and will be priced at 400 Euros ($546 USD) i.e. only $47 more than entry level iPad.
Furthermore, it is (almost) confirmed to run on Atom CPU + Windows7, supports Flash, has USB Connectivity and a memory card reader. The webcam, though, isn’t front facing (means you have to stand in front of a mirror, if you want to use it for video calls ). It is important to note that the details (and esp. the price) here is for Europe. The exact details of an outside-Europe launch are yet to be known.
Personally, even though the HP Slate seems better than iPad (in most areas), the doubt on Windows touch optimization remains in my mind. Windows isn’t an OS like Android or iPhone OS that was made ground-up to work on touch input. And the HP Slate leaking out pricing tidbits and availability is seen as nothing but an attempt to counter the iPad hype. Good luck HP, you have plenty of company already!
