The “Pop”, or the LG GD510, is the latest touchscreen phone joining the long list of iPhone-inspired designs. The phone features a 3-inch touch screen and seems to have crammed in only those features that LG considers essential. According to the company, users who *don’t* want a touchscreen handset with the “bells-and-whistles” will find the Pop fairly compact and pocketable.
Some might say that this is where iPhone competitors have managed to make a buck. If you can’t beat Apple at the high-end handset spectrum, make phones appealing to the lower-end of the market spectrum instead! By the way, this startegy apparently has worked pretty well for Nokia’s 5800 Smartphone, and the Cookie (aka KP500) from LG.
Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company adds: "Our high-end phones like the Black Label Series New LG Chocolate (LG BL40) may be getting all the attention but there's a gap in the market for affordable touchscreen phones that we want to fill. The LG GD510 delivers all the essentials in communication, multimedia and entertainment and comes in a compact form factor as well."
LG GD 510 specification list includes:
- 3G connectivity with EDGE/GPRS
- Bluetooth with A2DP, USB 2.0
- 3MP camera
- FM Radio
- 8GB internal memory
A single contextual button, and a small light strip – that glows either red or green depending on the handset’s function – physically adorn the face of the Pop. The brushed aluminum casing gives the LG GD510 a more classy look. Some of the pictures in the press release also show a solar charging panel, but this hasn’t been made an official part of the Pop by LG as yet.
The phone is set to be available first in mid-October in Europe. The pricing of this handset still needs to be finalized.
