Now here’s a product that, granted doesn’t fall under the usual host of technologies covered here at OG, but it should a smile to your face anyhow :)

Panasonic has recently displayed a revolutionary product at their headquarters in Osaka, Japan – a robotic wheelchair-plus-bed.This machine can change between a bed and a wheelchair, depending on the patient’s need, which would eliminate the need of any external help for the physically challenged. This robotic bed is able to take voice commands for the desired conversion, which makes it suitable for users with any kind of physical disorder.

The developers of the robotic chair hope that this device will allow for more independence among those with limited mobility. “Now, the user can join the family meal by converting the bed into a wheelchair and moving to the dining table without the need of assistance from other people,” a company spokesman said.

The robot’s function is not limited to the convertibility. In the wheelchair mode, the device can detect obstacles and avoid any kind of collision. In the bed mode, the mattress is adjusted to the body shape of the user. It also helps its user to turn over whenever necessary .

Panasonic’s robotic unit expects similar products to be on sale soon. The unit is also preparing for a sale of robotic items worth GBP 600,000 by 2015.
