Universal cellphone charger to be a reality soon

UCS

The need for a universal cellphone charger has been covered in the news for quite some time now. The GSM Association is already working towards having a single universal charger with major cellphone manufacturers such as Nokia, Sony Ericsson, LG, Motorola and Samsung. The Association is also working with carriers that include AT&T, KTF, Telefonica, T-Mobile and Vodafone for the same purpose. Meanwhile, the International Telecommunication Union, a division in the UN, has approved of a new Universal Charging Solution (UCS).

The UCS will be an energy efficient charging solution and should be compatible with all the makes and cellphone models. Apart from being energy efficient, UCS will also help greatly reduce e-waste. The same charger would be used and retained for new cellphones as users discard of older handsets. We wonder if new cellphones would then come with an optional charger.

The technical specifications of the UCS have not yet been declared by the International Telecommunication Union. With major phone manufacturers – such as Nokia and Sony Ericsson – being common partners in both the association and the UCS project, the possibility of he partners coming out with a similar universal charging option cannot be ruled out.  Rumor also has it that the GSM Association is working on making the universal charger compatible with microUSB.

The International Telecommunication Union is expected to implement the UCS in European cellphones starting from 2010.
