Is motion sensing really the way ahead?

wireless gamingIt has been almost two years since Nintendo wowed us with the Wii and its motion sensing controller, and since then, the rest of the gaming world has been playing catch-up. And well, it finally seems to be doing so. The past week has seen an announcement that a motion sensing controller for the PS3 would be available next year, while the discussion on Microsoft’s much-talked about Project Natal goes on and on. The official line, of course, is that we will see it sometime next year too.

All of which gives the impression that the future of gaming is pretty much going to be more about waving your hands in front of a display rather than pushing buttons on a gamepad. While that might fill some of your hearts with gaming delight, we are going to be a bit more circumspect. It is one thing to wave your hand around in a sporty game but imagine trying to do the same thing in a gave like, say, Devil May Cry, where you need to control a sword and pistol at the same time. There is also the little matter of whether developers will be able to customise well-known franchises for motion sensing. Heck, will all of them even make sense with motion sensing – I mean, it makes more sense to be using a steering wheel in a racing game rather than waving your arms around, right? Finally, there is the little matter of those ladies and gents who actually play games to relax and not to have a minor work out. Take me, for instance. I would rather curl up in front of a display and mess around with Fable 2 using my Xbox 360 wireless controller rather than stand in front of a screen and wave my arms around trying to control a character’s weapon in Alone in the Dark.

Accuse me of being pessimistic, but I am not exactly jumping for joy at the attack of motion sensing game controllers!Similar Posts:
