HTC Imagio launches on Verizon: WinMo 6.5 and VCAST TV on October 6

Those Imagio rumors have proven to be deliciously correct, with Verizon officially announcing the beastly Windows Mobile 6.5 set for availability on October 6 — the first day 6.5 devices will officially be available anywhere. HTC’s latest CDMA device features a spacious wide VGA display clocking in at 3.6 inches, a 5 megapixel autofocus cam, quadband EDGE plus HSPA 2100 for when you’re looking for a little connectivity abroad, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and the very latest iteration of TouchFLO 3D featuring social network integration, but the most interesting feature might be its support for MediaFLO-based VCAST TV — a first for HTC and Windows Mobile. Interest parties need only wait until next Tuesday to latch onto an Imagio online, while retail stores will be taking delivery on the 20th of the month — either way, you’ll be paying $199.99 on contract after rebate.

Lenovo's Lost & Found looks to guilt trip thieves into returning your ThinkPad

Lenovo's Lost & Found looks to guilt trip thieves into returning your ThinkPad

So, a little situation for you. You leave your ThinkPad in the third row of waiting seats at Jackson Hole Airport, already distraught that you’re departing Winter Wonderland and heading back to reality. A kindhearted Wyomian happens upon it, and clearly recognizes that he / she should figure out a way to return it. If you’re signed up for the gratis Lost & Found service (which does require a subscription to Absolute Computrace), the finder will spot a 1-800 number on the outside of the ThinkPad or on the display as it’s powered on. From there, he / she simply dials the aforementioned number, waits for the free pre-paid box to arrive, ships it off to Lenovo (to protect your address, naturally) and basks in the satisfaction of knowing that Lenovo will handle the shipping to you. Sound good? Great — it’s now available on all ThinkPads enabled with Absolute Software’s Computrace. Phew!

Video: SNES runs beautifully on N900, makes out hearts flutter

We’ve already seen Nokia’s Maemo 5-powered N900 pull off some pretty fanciful tricks, but without qualification this is the one most dear to our hearts. Somehow or another, Konttori managed to get his palms around an N900 of his own, and rather than testing out the social networking abilities or battery life, he simply installed an SNES emulator, tweaked it to accept Wiimote controls and even connected it to his TV for a staggeringly authentic gameplay experience. Vicarious living is just a click or two away, so hop on past the break for a video of the action. Oh, and don’t mind the baby — he’s not in the corner or anything.

[Thanks, Sathish]

Video: ABB FlexPicker replaces human pancake pickers with amazing effect

Mmm, pancakes. While moms might be responsible for giving us our first taste, it’s the humble robot that makes these golden-brown discs of battered splendor available for mass market binging. A promotional video from ABB Robotics shows how its FlexPicker robots installed at a HoneyTop foods facility can accelerate production while simultaneously improving hygienic conditions. Four gigabit Ethernet cameras are mounted in front of each robot to locate the pancakes running down the conveyor belt. Software allows the bots to recognize and grab overlapping pancakes and then stack the ‘cakes for easy packing. A software reconfig allows for quick production changes from pancakes to pretty much anything the robot can grasp including Soylent Green ration wafers. The video starts slow, but delivers with an impressive 400 pancakes per minute sorting routine — see it after the break.

QNAP ships NMP-1000 Network Multimedia Player

It sure took ‘em long enough, but QNAP has finally come around and delivered its NMP-1000 Network Multimedia Player here in the States. If you’ll recall, we actually toyed around with one way back at CeBIT, and while those camped out in Osaka have been enjoying the spoils for months now, the Yanks in attendance have been forced to wait. According to QNAP, the DLNA-compliant media streamer is now shipping in America, though a quick look around our favorite web stores has turned up nothing. We’re sure that’ll be remedied in short order, though.

Apple rejects iSinglePayer iPhone app for being 'politically charged'

Apple rejects iSinglePayer iPhone app for being 'politically charged'

Apple might be talking a big game about how it’s revising the App Store approval process with an oversight board and trotting out Phil Schiller to do damage control at opportune moments, but the process itself is still generating inconsistent and maddening results — like today’s rejection of an app advocating for healthcare reform called iSinglePayer, which was rejected for being “politically charged.” Yeah, that’s insane, especially since the app just consists of healthcare spending information and a GPS-driven lookup tool for local Congress members and how much money they’ve received in health-sector donations. Say what you want about the political motivations of the app, but that’s a fairly benign set of functions, and it’s one that’s been echoed by political apps on both sides of the aisle since the launch of the App Store. So why this rejection, and why now, when apps with names like “Conservative Talking Points” have been approved? And honestly, how is it even possible anyone at Apple is dumb enough to reject this without anticipating the firestorm of controversy it would cause? Who knows anymore — we have a feeling ol’ Phil’s about to earn his paycheck explaining this one.

P.S.- We’re not here to debate politics, so keep it clean down there, mmkay?

Chilean PS3 ads show gamer giving blood tranfusion to a Nazi

You’d think Sony’s ad teams would have learned to stay away from needlessly controversial imagery after that whole “White is coming” PSP debacle or even those “Take a Running Jump Here” ads, but… they haven’t. Check out these Chilean PlayStation 3 ads, which show a modern-day gamer giving a heart transplant to Joan of Arc and a blood transfusion to a Nazi. Yes, Sony has Godwin’d its own advertising. The Nazi in question is supposed to be Erwin Rommel, a highly decorated and respected German field marshal, but it’s not like Sony’s really riffing on that here, and making an ad with a swastika in it that relies on your audience to know the subtle nuances of WWII history just isn’t the smartest move in the world. It’s a pretty simple rule: if you make a video game ad with Nazis in it and it’s not about shooting the Nazis, you’ve screwed up. Let’s just stick with those creeptastic Japanese PS3 spots, okay?

P.S.- We’ll shut off comments in a heartbeat. Behave yourselves.

Second-generation air-powered robot hand gets more sensitive

Accordions and robots don’t seem to have much in common — although an accordion-playing robot would make for a killer Weird Al song. Nevertheless, the RAPHaEL hand showed that push-box tech can make for some impressively limber fingers. Now the Virginia Tech College of Engineering Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory has created its successor, the RAPHaEL 2, and it too has already won an award. This time it grabbed top honors at the ASME Student Mechanism and Robot Design Competition with its air-powered digits, which now use a closed loop control mechanism and more advanced data acquisition hardware from National Instruments, enabling it to better sense what it’s groping and to adjust pressure accordingly. It’s also made of a more durable polycarbonate, but a carbon fiber version is said to be in the works, which should look totally awesome.

PSP Go found in the wild being sold ahead of October 1st launch date?

PSP Go found in the wild being sold ahead of October 1st launch date?

Feel free to feign surprise, but seeing how Sony handled the PlayStation 3 Slim’s launch, we kind of expected this. According to an anonymous tipster, at least one Metro Atlanta-area Target store has the PSP Go in stock and is apparently already selling them to (presumably) eager customers. So much for that October 1st street date, but you’re still gonna have to wait until then for all the new digital content. We’ve pinged Sony for more details. In the meantime, anyone else happen upon the new portable during their daily travels?

Thermaltake's brain-melting Level 10 PC chassis gets real, unboxed

Remember that Thermaltake enclosure that blew your mind back in March? Of course — you’re still recovering, after all. Fast forward to today, and that very case — which had a hint of BMW influence, by the way — has morphed into reality, and it’s far and away one of the most fabulous cases we’ve ever seen. Amazingly, the finished product looks awfully similar to the concept, with each compartment boasting its own ventilation. There’s room for pretty much anything you’d ever want (yes, even room for three Blu-ray writers), and of course, enough LEDs are included to light up the average night club. You should also know that the shipping container weighed 66 pounds and the chassis itself is probably larger than your eight year old, so unless you’ve got more square footage than you know what to do with, you’re probably better off viewing the unboxing shots (there in the via link) from afar.

GPU-accelerated 720p Flash video gets demoed on a netbook (smoothly)

It’s been a long wait since NVIDIA and Adobe announced their plans for GPU-accelerated Flash video back in January of this year, but it looks like the pair now finally have something to show for themselves. While it’s not quite clear how official it is just yet, the folks at NotebookJournal have nonetheless published a video that shows 720p Flash video running smoothly on a netbook (an ION-powered HP Mini 311, to be specific). Unfortunately, it looks like we’ll still have to wait until sometime in the first half of 2010 to see the technology become publicly available (at least if the slides in the video are any indication), but you can now check out the demo for yourself after the break. Just be sure to stick with it for a while or skip ahead to the 1:20 mark — they show a non-accelerated video at the beginning for an all too painful comparison.

Rumor: Full QWERTY curvy handsets from Microsoft

turtle

The tech world is buzzing with what is rumored to be new handsets that seem to be a part of the Microsoft’s “Pink” Project. The phones are still in concept phase, but the pictures have quite a high-quality clarity. The two phones have been dubbed ‘Turtle’ and ‘Pure’.

No official news from Microsoft so no one knows about the actual specs. From the pics though, it can be seen that one of them (above) is a Palm Pre look-alike with more curves and a full slide-out QWERTY keypad. The other (below) looks more like the curvy sibling  of the Nokia N97.

Another rumor says that one of these, or even both devices, will be featuring a Zune-like UI. But, as we said already, none of the news has yet been made official. Till the full picture gets clear, go ahead and enjoy these pictures, and let us know (in the comments) if you would like to own one of these curvilicious phones.

RED releases high-res images of accessories, no actual accessories

When RED’s Scarlet and EPIC camera bodies finally became official late last year (after seemingly endless teasing) they were pictured with an almost farcical array of accessories. Nearly a year on and neither of the bodies nor any of those add-ons are available, but you can at least now get a higher-res look at all that wallet-tapping accoutrement. Pictured are the REDVOLT battery pack and its hot-swappable cells, the wireless REDMOTE controller, the BOMB EVF, a display screen, and even a rifle-like stock called the RED GUNNER. Some of these we’ve already seen in the flesh, others haven’t been rendered with this much detail before, and sifting through the REDUSER.net forum where they were posted uncovers some other morsels to whet the appetites of photographers who like extreme stylistic touches. The juciest is a mention that the release dates for EPIC and Scarlet will be announced in October — which doesn’t leave much time for a 2009 debut for the cameras themselves.

10 meaningless gizmos that we shamelessly featured

10 meaningless gizmos that we shamelessly featured

Yeah meaningless, but still loved by some. Such are these weird concepts, shapes and design, but somewhere geeky gadgets that we featured over the years.

http://onlygizmos.com/content/2009/07/wificap_thumb.jpg

WiFi Detecting Cap: There is absolutely no practical use for this WiFi detecting cap and formany onlookers this would be nothing but some fancy lights on your head. I would have given this a try if it could speak out in my ears and tell me if there is a WiFi network out there, instead of expecting me to look at my forehead and figure that out :P

http://onlygizmos.com/content/2009/08/Light-Bulb-USB-Drive_3-350x262.jpg

Lightbulb Keychain with USB: We are going to see some weird USB drives here. This particular one is a keychain with USB drive. But I wonder why would someone opt for this funny shape? And my old concern that this would really lift your notebook off the table when you try to use this as a USB drive.

cchilli-pepper-usb

Chilli USB Drive: Even if I end up being a chef, I wouldn’t use this.

http://onlygizmos.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/poorpl_03.jpg

Clothespin USB flash drive: Apart from the sensuous pictures used to promote this idea, there is nothing exciting here. I don’t see anyone student or professional using this stuff!

http://onlygizmos.com/content/2009/02/usb-fridge.jpg

USB Fridge: If at home, I surely don’t need this. And if this is something you expect to carry around with your notebook, I would certainly try and convince you to carry a printer-scanner aswell (its called a notebook, portable PC for a reason!).

http://onlygizmos.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/piggy-mouse.jpg

Piggy Mouse: No we didn’t feature this during H1N1 days. It came long before that :P

http://onlygizmos.com/content/2009/09/handgrenadeusbdrive1_s.jpg

Grenade USB Drive: This is something that would have been really trendy before 9/11 days. Unfortunately this thing has arrived 8 years late for me.

http://onlygizmos.com/content/2009/03/fruit-powered-clock1.jpg

Fruit powered watch: I would rather eat the fruit and use the lemon water powered watch. However the looks is cool. Wonder if this will pitch to Steve Jobs to promote this.

http://onlygizmos.com/content/2009/04/afbc_pets_eye_dig_camera_inuse1.jpg

SPY dog camera: Believe me I really respect my dogs privacy. And I really have better things to blow away those $ on. To start with some dog biscuits :)

http://onlygizmos.com/content/2009/02/eye-warmer-350x262.jpg

USB Eye warmer: Hope this ship this with a really long cable. No points for guessing, this is a Japanese concept :) Similar Posts:
