Palm Pre is off to a flyer and definitely the best iPhone competitor we have seen. For some reason I wouldn’t call it an iPhone competitor, rather see it as a brilliant smartphone - with its own identity. It offers equally good stuff to Blackberry addicts and iPhone fans. While many Palm critics have termed Pre as a failure even before its launched, I don’t care if they call it an also-ran or a copycat; the fact remain that Palm Pre will do well and Palm even better with the Web OS.
Not immediately creating a buzz equivalent to iPhone, Palm does hold the strength to give the Apple iPhone a run for its money in the near future. Here are my reasons for why Palm will not just survive but do great with its WebOS:
- Pre alone would manage to stabilize the company finances and restore faith amongst investors. Funding for any plans in the near future would be smooth.
- Going global? Palm Pre isn’t limited to Sprint - US itself. Our sources tell us that they are actively negotiating with carriers around the world (Vodafone in India). A GSM version can be expected in a few months.
- Sprint might not be the biggest carrier but gives enough sales to Pre in the first 6 months. Reports of Palm Pre hitting Verizon in Jan 2010 are already floating.
- Palm EOS is already leaked and we can certainly expect more launches in 2010.

- & If you feel gaming and media is really important to a smartphones huge success; you probably haven’t heard of RIM’s Blackberry or you missed two names associated with Palm - Jon Rubinstein & Matias Duarte.
Its not just how things are poised at the moment that decide the future. As rightly mentioned by one of the Palm investors, Palm has a unique DNA! They conceptualized the Foleo that would have been a netbook months ahead of the concept being introduced to the market (its unfortunate that they had to scrap it to concentrate on the WebOS back then). Building great products is not about having a great lineup to build upon but realising what will stand in the times to come. I feel Palm can very well push out breakthrough products and they are headed in the right direction.
