The Portegé R600 has Toshiba's Biggest, Fastest SSD Yet

Toshiba Portegé R600

Toshiba has released a 512GB solid state drive (SSD) in their newest Portegé laptop this week, the most storage space (and yet the smallest in size!) for an SSD drive on the laptop market so far.

Aside from the normal advantages of flash drives (no more hard-drive head-docking-clicks when you jiggle it on your knees), this new drive uses a parallel processing controller that Toshiba promises will get you around 230MB/180MB per second read/write speeds. These read/write speeds are comparable to any smaller solid-state drive, and definitely faster than most traditional hard drives.

Basically, there’s no downside - technically speaking - and the solid state drive (coupled with a low-voltage Intel processor) means that the machine has twelve hours of battery life. It’s also tiny, like Toshiba’s earlier Portegé series - 0.77″ and less than 2.5lbs fully loaded. However, the Portegé R600 cashes in at a hefty $3500, so it’s definitely not for the average consumer laptop user, at least not yet. Check it out on Toshiba’s website.
