Samsung's Bada OS shows its face (Preview)

Seems like Samsung has realised that selling 50million touchscreens won’t help in the long run if the OS on the phone is crappy. The recent Samsung phone like the Star series and the Corby series are advertised heavily with integrated FB, Twitter and Orkut. But the reality is that using any of these services or even plain internet on the Corby/Star browser is a PAIN. So here comes the solution from Samsung: Bada OS. Instead of sticking to the known names like Android, Symbian or Windows Mobile; Samsung has decided to walk the tough path like Palm and create its own OS.

Bada OS is open and would allow developers to take good advantage of the open platform at the same time the leaked UI images are nothing path breaking but worked upon Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. BadaOS is certainly future ready with support for multitouch and a minimum resolution of 800×400 for handsets that would sport this new OS. Bada screenshots reveal good social media integration similar to what we are seeing with the Xperia X10 and others. You will notice the Twitter / FB updates in contacts. Samsung Bada would debut sometime in 2010 and is expected to gain momentum in 2011/2012.

Having its own OS would certainly help Samsung to exercise better control over the final products and but Samsung isn’t a software co like Microsoft, Google or Apple. The no.2 cellphone manufacturer in the world is a status that Samsung enjoys for serving the masses with low end devices. The growing marketshare of smartphones is a challenge it needs to crack and I am eager to see what Bada OS beings to the table.
