Palm surely wants to go global and cash in on Pre success to the fullest. A GSM version of the Pre has been spotted with a SIM card slot. Though it is expected that Palm would give priority to the UK market for its GSM version, Asia might get its hands on the Pre soon enough.
In US, currently the Pre is tied to Sprint and Verizon is expected to get it early next year. We are also hearing from our sources in India that Vodafone is planning to launch the Pre later this year. Palm is surely here to stay!

To accommodate netbook users willing to upgrade its OS to Windows 7, Microsoft
to market Windows 7 on USB flash drive. As netbook doesn’t accompanies with
optical drive, so to install new software for it is a hectic job and thus thumb
drive is the best option. Microsoft is also told to offer a version of windows
which is downloadable and allows the users to save the US on any of their
USB flash drive.
If this is done than, the released USB drive for the windows 7, would be first
ever OS 7 in that format. Off course, it
would cost Microsoft a lot as it needs a 10 GB of space and such flash drive would
increase the cost than a DVD.

Need a little more proof that Intel’s got some fly SSDs about ready to roll? We have confirmation from Micron that it’s working on new and improved 34nm chips in capacities of 8, 16, and 32Gb. These lovelies are 17 percent smaller than the previous rainbow colored flash delights, and are faster too, offering 200Mb/s transfer speeds and when combined into an SSD, able to keep up with SATA 6Gb/s transfers. This press release confirms the chips will show up in flash memory from Lexar, but we’re guessing that official Intel announcement can’t be far off now.

One of our favorite intellectual property rips of recent months is without a doubt the SciPhone Dream G2 from China. Having completely missed the point of Google’s open-source OS being, well, open-source and thus free for SciPhone’s use, the company instead chose to hack the G2’s “proprietory” OS to look like Android. The charger, however, built to look like the iconic Android mascot is pretty damn cute; enough so that the idea of paying $150 just to get our hands on the 100-240V USB charger has crossed our minds. See the Android’s naughty bits after the break.
[Thanks, Steven]

In an attempt to attract upgrades from XP and Vista to the new Windows 7, Microsoft has decided to keep Windows 7 pricing below that of Windows Vista. Microsoft has also decided to keep the pricing for new Windows 7 lower enough to lure new customers.
On Thursday, Microsoft finally came upto a pricing decision for its new generation OS. The decision comes as the outcome of learning from the pitfalls of Windows Vista pricing.
Microsoft will be launching three Windows 7 editions in the global market- Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate. At $120, Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade would cost the customers about $40 less than the Vista Upgrade offered two years back. The stand-alone version would be available at $200 with a similar drop in the pricing. There has been no changes in the pricing of Windows 7 Professional and Windows Vista Professional. Which means that Professional edition of Windows 7 would also cost $200 for an upgrade and $300 for the new copy. Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade would cost $220 as compared to the Windows Vista Ultimate’s $260. The new copy of Windows 7 Ultimate would cost $320, $80 less than Vista Ultimate’s pricing 2 years ago.
The customers willing to pre-order the new Windows OS would have to pay even less. The Windows 7 starts shipping on October 22. Those who pre-order their copy of Windows 7 between 26th June to 11th July would have to pay just $50 or $100 for an upgrade to Home Premium or Professional edition respectively. Companies like HP are also giving Windows 7 free of cost or for a nominal fees for all the PCs sold from 26th June till Windows 7 come preloaded in the new computers.
Along with windows Vista customers, those customers still using the Windows XP would also be allowed to upgrade to Windows 7. So these customers would not have to spend their money on a new copy. But the upgrade would be a new install and not just an upgrade to XP, as available for the Vista users.
"Overall, customers will be paying less and getting more with Windows 7," said Brad Brooks, Microsoft's corporate vice president for Windows consumer marketing. "This includes fun new features such as HomeGroup, Device Stage, Aero Shake, Snap, Peek, Jump Lists and our completely redesigned Windows Taskbar (one of my favourite new features in Windows 7 today). These new features make your PC simpler and much easier to use."
While the Apple’s Mac OS X Snow Leopard upgrade would be available for just $24 and a month prior to the availability of Windows 7, looks like the customers considering the upgrade pricing for their decisions would definitely find Apple’s deal more appealing.

The U.S. has Netflix, the UK has Sky TV and now France is getting Canal+ added to the Xbox 360, in a similar deal to the one bringing live and on-demand Sky TV in England, the French will be free to party up and watch more than 3,000 movies and TV shows, catch-up TV, French Ligue 1 soccer games, and headbutt flopping, filthy-mouthed Italians in the chest. No word if sports hooliganism will be supported in this iteration, but judging from the screens the avatar support should also mirror its UK counterpart. This is likely not the end of tie-ups between the two either, with the partnership planned to eventually encompass other Canal Plus & Microsoft products. Check out one additional pic of the updated dashboard after the break.

It’s just a rumor, but DigiTimes has pretty decent sources within Taiwan’s motherboard industry. So what was a Q1 2010 mass production launch of Clarkdale CPUs is now rumored to be coming in Q4, notable as the first Intel CPU to use its new 32nm process technology while the integrated memory controller and graphics core are built on a 45nm process. This jibes with what DailyTECH and others were reporting back in Feburary. DigiTimes adds that Intel expects Clarkdale CPUs to account for 10% of its total desktop CPU shipments in Q4 rising to 20% in Q1 2010. That means we should see the chips well before the holiday shopping season (near the October 22nd launch of Windows 7 makes sense) if true. As for AMD, well, last we heard they’re still looking to “ramp up” production in the middle of 2010 with mass production capabilities arriving around Q4. Yeah, we know.

Interesting piece in the New York Times today about Acer — the company is about to ride the tidal wave of netbooks and other el-cheapo computers straight to the number two spot on the PC sales chart. That’s a big deal — no non-US company has ever made it so high — and it’s interesting that the strategies Acer took to get there are the same things Dell’s been trying to do lately: it’s heavy on low-cost, stylish laptops and netbooks, it keeps inventory extremely lean, and it relies on an extensive set of retail partnerships in Europe. What’s more, the Aspire One has been the best-selling netbook for a while now, and we’d say Acer’s way out in front of the CULV thin-and-light race with the Timeline — in fact, we’d say the only open question here is whether the company can take all this computing success and translate it to something worthwhile in the smartphone space. Based on what we’ve seen so far, we’ve got our doubts, but we’ll see what those super-secret Android sets look like before we place our bets.

Us tech and Sci-Fi aficionados are always on the lookout for the latest and greatest. We’re constantly starving for the best, bleeding-edge technology, and we drool when we watch the Star Treks and Minority Reports of the world thinking, “we’ll never get there.” Think again, because here are 10 gadgets from movies that became a reality. Some of these may not be in mass production yet, but if we’ve made it this far, just think of the possibilities.
This one has been mentioned several times before, and there are plenty of videos showcasing the different advancements in touch/gesture-based computing. All you have to do is Google “minority report computer interface” and you’ll get many hits, including a TED conference video demonstrating different applications for the technology. Find out more here from PopSci.
Yes. Just yes. According to Gizmodo, researchers at Cornell have been playing with superconductors and permanent magnets. They’re looking to use this to keep spacecraft tethered together without touching just like the pod racers in Star Wars. Fast forward a few years though, and we’ve got ourselves magnetically tethered advanced spacecraft.
Obviously this won’t translate alien languages, but it will translate almost any language in the world on the fly, back and forth. We have our handy Mr. Ray Kurweil, futurist, inventor extraordinaire to thank for this. Check out his universal translator.
H.G. Wells was the originator of this concept over 100 years ago in his novel War of the Worlds. Since then, heat rays have been a staple of Sci-Fi films and TV shows. No longer is it science fiction, however, since the military has been testing its own heat ray. They claim the rays do no permanent damage, but make you feel as if your skin is burning. Check out this other ray gun the military has in production and is supposedly testing in Iraq. Image via Daylife.
These guys have been the propellers for every spaceship since who knows when. And we can only dream until we’re able to hit warp speed. Until then, check out NASA’s Deep Space 1, which was launched over 10 years ago in 1998 which uses ion thrusters to propel itself to speeds upwards of 88,000 mph. This spacecraft uses a cathode to fire high-energy electrons into a propellant, converting atoms into positively-charged ions by kicking off electrons.
How many times have we seen James Bond talking to his wrist? Now you can do it too. Enter the LG GD910 3G Watch Phone. They introduced this one at CES 2009. You can check out a video review of it over here, and check out plenty of photos here.
For all you Harry Potter fans, this one’s for you. It’s been several years that Japanese scientists at the University of Tokyo have been working on a real-life invisibility cloak. Their results have been promising. Even more so, scientists at Duke University made claims about 5 months ago that “within six months it’s certainly viable” to have a working model and cloak visible light. Check out this article for more info. Also, National Geographic posted a great article late last year.
Who wouldn’t give anything for a suit that gives you superhuman strength, supersonic flight capabilities, the smartest AI visor ever, and most of all, style? The Iron Man suit is still many moons away, but this is a step in the right direction. Inventor Steve Jacobsen and his company Sarcos, are working on an exoskeleton that makes it possible for humans to lift hundreds of pounds without even trying. The suit is still in the rough, and it looks more like something that Sigourney Weaver would wear (it also only runs for 40 minutes on batteries), but who knows… maybe in 15 years?
Coming soon to a military near you, force fields. This one is up there along with hover crafts and warp speeds. Supposedly, the US along with many countries around the world, are pumping plenty of cash in R&D for plasma shields. The theory goes that plasma, which is gas with all its particles ionized, thickens at high temperatures. Not sure it if could stop much of anything yet. It’s still in development and it could take years more to come to fruition, but it’s closer than many other fantasy techs (ie time travel).
Not in the Terminator style sense we tend to think of, but a South Korean conglomerate announced the Intelligent Surveillance and Guard Robot. It looks a bit more like a gatling gun with legs, and it’s stationary, but it can identify humans, trees, and vehicles 2.5 miles away. Each one costs about $200,000. Watch the robot in action.
Apple’s guided tour videos have featured an endless variety of creepy-android perfect “Apple Store employees” in the recent past, but we’d just like to take a moment and pour one out for OG Bob Borchers, who kicked off the entire series in 2007 with the original iPhone tours and followed ‘em up with the iPhone 3G tour. Bob’s leaving his post as Apple’s senior director of worldwide iPhone product marketing to join VC group Opus Capital — yeah, it’s not hard gadget news, but we’re getting a little misty on Sunday evening remembering how closely we all watched those initial demos looking for any tiny nuggets of information about the then-mysterious platform. Peace out, Bob — it’s been a ride. Video after the break.

We doubt the July 15 delivery date is set in stone, but UK residents itching to get a little Hero in their lives are now able to pre-order HTC’s latest for £429 ($708). That’s pretty much what we’d expect for an unlocked set, but Orange is planning to offer the Hero free on contract, so we’d be inclined to hang on just a teensy bit longer. Video after the break.
