Android gaining momentum, 50 phones in 2010?

Market research firms CCS Insight has forecasted that more Android-powered handsets could be expected in the coming year. The Android OS has had its ups and downs during 2009. The initial interest from some well-known mobile manufacturers and from the application developers for the Android Market has given the Android OS a head-start. The real flight of the OS is yet to begin.

2009 saw a launch of 10 Android powered phones. With most of the 2010 commitments for Android already known, CCS believes that the next year could easily see a launch of 50 of Android devices. “There are so many companies that have committed to delivering devices … so to get to 50 isn’t that difficult,” said Ben Wood, analyst at CCS Insight.

The Android devices expected .include the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, which is expected to debut in the first quarter of 2010. There are rumors that SE is working on more Android devices. While Acer is expected to launch five or siz Android handsets in the first half of 2010, an equal number can be expected from HTC during the same period. CCS also expects that Motorola will introduce another 10 Android mobiles after the success of Droid. The rumored Google phone powered by Android is also set to launch in the same year (if it exists).

Woods also expects that with little subsidies from the operators, the Android handsets may fall to “silly prices” in the first half of 2010. So we can expect more options at lower prices till Android gets deeper in the market with operator subsidies.

While Android sure has some potential and support from the manufacturers, it still has a huge competition to go through. The huge customer base of Symbian and the application base of Apple can be some of the bigger challenges that Android has to overcome over the coming years.
