Mio stuns at CeBIT with ultra-sleek Moov V780 MID

Uh, folks — we’ve an identity crisis on our hands. Is this a MID with a penchant for navigating? Is this a PMP with pre-loaded maps? Is it an ultra-sleek navigator that just so happens to play music? There’s a fair chance the world will never know, but we’ll soon be stopping by Mio’s booth at CeBIT in order to get a view of things ourselves. At any rate, the Moov V780 is undoubtedly one of the most appealing things to come from the outfit in quite some time, offering up 720p multimedia playback, an HDMI output, digital TV support, a 7-inch (800 x 480 resolution) display, 600MHz CPU, 512MB of memory, 4GB of onboard flash and a pretty tremendous list of supported file formats. Sadly, it’s humming along on Windows CE (rather than, say, Android), but at least it ships with WiFi and optional WiMAX. There’s no mention of a price or release date, but we’ll be on the hunt for those tidbits as soon as the show floor opens up.

Viliv S5 MID gets accuracy-boosting HID driver for Windows 7

Viliv’s S5 MID, the little machine that packs the Vaio P’s Z520 processor in a legitimately pocketable form-factor, just got a breath of fresh air. It’s an HID (human interface device) driver for Windows 7, boosting the machine’s touchscreen abilities and enabling the breadth of Windows 7’s tablet functionality. According to Uber Tablet this greatly enhances usability by, amongst other things, presenting the Windows tablet keyboard rather than relying on the accessibility version and enabling better calibration. The driver being used here is legitimate according to reports we’ve read, but it is not signed and doesn’t appear to be an official release from Viliv, so you may want to exercise a bit of caution before you install — but don’t wait too long. This sounds like a pretty tasty update.

Corsair Nova, Reactor SSDs now available

Well, it didn’t exactly seem like these were nearing an imminent release when they were introduced earlier this month, but Corsair has now pulled a pleasant surprise and announced that its new Nova and Reactor SSD drives are available right now. As expected, the Reactor series comes in 60GB and 120GB varieties and uses the Micron JMF612 controller with 128MB of DDR2 memory, while the Nova boasts 64GB or 128GB capacities and uses an Indilinx Barefoot controller with 64MB of cache memory. Speeds are drastically different between the two, but the Nova does have a slight edge, with the 128GB model coming out on top at 270MB/second read and 190MB/second write. Prices range from $185 for the 60GB Reactor to $375 for the 128GB Nova.

Yoshi Akai's Wireless Catcher senses nearby wireless waves, makes music (video)

Yoshi Akai's Wireless Catcher senses nearby wireless waves, makes music (video)

What’s cute, cuddly, and makes all sorts of bizarro noises when it senses wireless waves? Yoshi Akai’s Wireless Catcher, of course! This analog synth contraption is simplistic in nature and complex in design, utilizing an onboard antenna to sense WiFi signals and then alter the sounds being outputted depending on signal strength and direction. It’s not exactly the symphony that Bach forgot to write, but it’s certainly beautiful in its own nerdy way. Have a look at the video past the break, won’t you?

Apple supplier audit reveals sub-minimum wage pay and records of underage labor

Apple supplier audit reveals sub-minimum wage pay and records of underage labor

Apple’s famous desire for total control over its operations seems to have extended to its manufacturing facilities as we’ve come across Cupertino’s Supplier Responsibility 2010 Progress Report, which details audits the American company has done of its overseas suppliers and the failures identified therein. The findings are pretty damning on the whole, with more than half (54 percent) of all factories failing to meet Apple’s already inflated maximum 60-hour work week, 24 percent paying less than the minimum wage, 37 percent failing to respect anti-discrimination rules, and three facilities holding records of employing a total of eleven 15-year olds (who were over the legal age of 16 or had left by the time of the audit). Apple is, predictably, not jazzed about the situation, and has taken action through train-the-trainer schemes, threats of business termination with recidivist plants, and — most notably — the recovery of $2.2 million in recruitment fees that international contract workers should not have had to pay.

It should come as no shock to learn that cheaper overseas factories are cutting illegal corners, but it’s disappointing to hear Apple’s note that most of the 102 audited manufacturers said Cupertino was the only vendor to perform such rigorous compliance checks. Still, we’ll take what we can get and the very existence of this report — which can be savagely skewed to defame Apple’s efforts (as demonstrated expertly by The Daily Telegraph below) — is an encouraging sign that corporate responsibility is being taken seriously. We hope, wherever your geek loyalties and fervor may lie, that you’ll agree Apple’s leading in the right direction and that its competitors should at the very least have matching monitoring schemes. They may have to swallow some bad PR at first, but sweeping up the dirty details of where gadgets come from is juvenile and has no place in a civilized world. Hit the source link for the full report.

SilverStone HDDBoost gets reviewed, okayed for purchase by most Earthlings

SilverStone’s HDDBoost is an interesting, if not completely unique, offering. It’s a relatively inexpensive (around $45) option for boosting performance in older machines, but it still requires the purchase of a decidedly not inexpensive SSD. For those with one already on hand (not to mention a traditional HDD), it allows you to have a RAID-type setup that provides peace of mind and a performance boost when it comes time to boot or load an application. Critics over at HardwareCanucks found that this little doohickey actually provided a noticeable increase in speed when coming from an older HDD-based setup, but those already using a WD Black Edition or Raptor probably “won’t see much of a difference in terms of load times.” They also point out that users should certainly use second-generation SSDs if picking one up, and if you’ve been searching for the next big breath of life to send to your aging desktop, you owe it to yourself to peek the full writeup.

Forget dual sim, Intex launches a “triple sim” phone

Forget dual sim, Intex launches a "triple sim" phone

Yes, there is no more twist in the tale to the headline. Intex has launched a triple SIM phone in India, named IN 5030. As a part of my first post on OnlyGizmos, I had discussed what would happen If Nokia launched dual SIM phones (a rumor back then). But this thing is totally blowing my mind off.

The phone has some features that are common with most Indian budget phones while adding some astonishing new features. Yes! You read it right, the triple SIM thing is real and the reason the features feel astonishing is its price.

Specs of IN 5030:

  • 2 GSM 900/1800 + 1 CDMA800
  • Display:2.0? TFT & 65K Colors
  • GPRS/WAP
  • Talk Time:Up to 4 Hrs
  • Audio Player (with Audio Equalizer)
  • 1.3 MP Camera
  • Video Player (with Video Recorder)
  • FM Radio, FM Recording and FM Scheduler
  • Memory Expandable to 4GB (with MicroSD)
  • Bluetooth with A2DP
  • Mobile Tracker (in case you lose your cellphone to goons)
  • Auto Call Record
  • Dimensions: 111×48×14.8mm
  • Weight is 105 gms
  • Price :  Around Rs. 4700 /-  :D (just above $102 USD)

Yes, I agree the battery will last only 4 hours (less than average), but they had to compromise something to keep the price in reach of Indian middle class. Now, they only need to market it well and India’s middle class families (esp. in rural/semi-urban areas) will accept it both arms open (trust me!).

How would you change Google's Nexus One?

How would you change Google's Nexus One?

It hasn’t quite been out (in public hands, anyway) for two months, but Google’s Nexus One has managed to grab the world’s attention and focus it squarely on Android. Specs wise, it’s not the superphone that many had expected, but it’s certainly delightful in its own right. For those who have sprung for one, we’re bubbling over in anticipation to hear how you’d change it. Would you have snuck an overclocked processor in there? Would you have ditched the trackball for a sensor pad? Do you wish it were available on more carriers? Is the call quality up to snuff? Look — there’s a better-than-decent chance that you threw down some serious bills on this, so don’t hold back. The Nexus Two just won’t be the same without your pair of pennies.

JooJoo ship date pushed to March 25 due to manufacturing issues

Well, that didn’t take too long. Just a day after we pondered the shipping status of Fusion Garage’s JooJoo tablet, the company’s come clean and told us shipping will delayed to March 25 because of a manufacturing issue with the tablet’s 12.1-inch capacitive screen. Yep, it looks like it’s going to be at least 27 more days until you’ve got a JooJoo of your very own — which means, of course, that Fusion Garage will now be trying to launch this thing during the same week Apple’s scheduled to launch the iPad. Ouch. To its credit, Fusion Garage says it’s not happy with the delay and has promised a free accessory to pre-order customers to make it better — we’re told it’s likely to be the $30 stand. We’ll see if that’s enough to hold back the effects of Cupertino’s coming media blitz, but either way we’re quite excited about making a tablet sandwich at the end of March. Full PR after the break.

Shuttle's XS35 nettop is 3.3cm thin, too nice to hide behind your HDTV

Nettops keep getting better, and thinner too if Shuttle’s latest is anything to go by. It’s the XS35, a 3.3cm thin affair packing a a dual-core Intel Atom D510 at 1.6GHz and Ion 2 graphics with HDMI output for easy connectivity to your high definition display of choice. Somehow the company has also found room for five USB ports, VGA and discrete audio outputs, an Ethernet jack, and a card reader. It’s passively cooled, so the only noise you’ll hear will be the spinning platters of its 2.5-inch hard disk or the spinning of an optical disc, which yes somehow fits in there too (making it perfect for watching your Thunderbirds DVD collection). No price yet but it’ll be on display at CeBIT in just a few days and shipping sometime in the second quarter of this year.

Asus EEE lineup leaked ahead of ceBIT

After the technology showcase and launches we saw at CES and MWC, ceBIT (Germany) is knocking on the door. Amongst the plenty of notebooks that we expect to be shown at ceBIT, it seems that the Asus refresh of the EEE PC lineup has leaked out. Three new models 1015P, 1016P and 1018P are being reported by Akihabara news.

All of these models are expected to feature 10″ screen and some enticing details like aluminum body, fingerprint recognition, 14 hour battery life and USB 3.0 are being promised in these netbooks. Asus sure is looking forward to give Acer a tough run in this segment, however no word on what OS these would be running (though best bet is Windows 7).
