Palm Pre casually boots from the cold comfort of a blue Corian countertop

If we were a Palm employee and someone caught us using a Pre in public right about now — being the bumbling, unsuave fools that we are — we imagine the conversation would go something like this:

“Excuse me, sir, is that a Palm Pre?”

“What, this? No, it’s a RAZR.”

“Why does it look like a Pre then? And why does the screen say Palm on it?”

“Ah, uh, [unintelligible] emulator… it’s in the App Store. I, uh…”

“You can use the App Store with a RAZR?”

“Yes. Gotta… I’m late for… good talking to you!”

And with that, we’d hurriedly stuff our crap into our Jack Spade (nervously dropping the Pre three times in the process), knock over our triple tall latte, apologize to no one in particular, and run-walk aimlessly away.

The Portegé R600 has Toshiba’s Biggest, Fastest SSD Yet

The Portegé R600 has Toshiba's Biggest, Fastest SSD Yet

Toshiba Portegé R600

Toshiba has released a 512GB solid state drive (SSD) in their newest Portegé laptop this week, the most storage space (and yet the smallest in size!) for an SSD drive on the laptop market so far.

Aside from the normal advantages of flash drives (no more hard-drive head-docking-clicks when you jiggle it on your knees), this new drive uses a parallel processing controller that Toshiba promises will get you around 230MB/180MB per second read/write speeds. These read/write speeds are comparable to any smaller solid-state drive, and definitely faster than most traditional hard drives.

Basically, there’s no downside - technically speaking - and the solid state drive (coupled with a low-voltage Intel processor) means that the machine has twelve hours of battery life. It’s also tiny, like Toshiba’s earlier Portegé series - 0.77″ and less than 2.5lbs fully loaded. However, the Portegé R600 cashes in at a hefty $3500, so it’s definitely not for the average consumer laptop user, at least not yet. Check it out on Toshiba’s website.

Video: Intel-backed Volkswagen infotainment system gets demonstrated

Volkswagen has been known to dabble in exotic places when it comes to in-dash entertainment, and while it’s latest initiative isn’t totally far-fetched, it’s still worth a peek. The automaker has recently teamed up with Intel in order to develop a prototype head unit that’s completely self-enclosed, meaning that there’s no carputer hanging out in the trunk handling the dirty work. The touchscreen-based infotainment center shown in the video past the break is rocking Windows XP underneath and gladly accepts a number of gesture-based inputs. For example, motorists can swipe down to play or pause a track, while swiping left or right anywhere on the panel moves the playlist forward or back. The project manager doesn’t bother to say when this stuff will actually hit the showroom floor, but CNET has it that you’ll be waiting at least three years — and that’s if you’re lucky.

Intel details next-generation Atom platform, say hello to Pine Trail

Intel has been doing a lot of talking about big new processors and platforms as of late, and it’s now gotten official with one that’s soon to be ever-present: its next-generation Atom platform, codenamed Pine Trail. In case you haven’t been tracking the rumors, the big news here is that the processor part of the equation, dubbed Pineview, will incorporate both the memory controller and the GPU, which reduces the number of chips in the platform to two, and should result in some significant size and power savings. As Ars Technica points out, the platform is also the one that’ll be going head to head with NVIDIA’s Ion, which is likely to remain more powerful but not as affordable or efficient, especially considering that NVIDIA can’t match Intel’s on-die GPU. Either way, things should only get more interesting once Pine Trail launches in the last quarter of this year.

Mobidapter lets you connect a USB Drive to your mobile

mobiadaptor

Elan digital systems Mobidapter is a cool gadget, that lets you transfer data from your Cellphone to a USB Flash drive without any system in between. Yes you heard me right! Connect a USB drive to your mobile. Mobiadapter fits in the MicroSD slot of your mobile and lets you connect a USB device on the other end. Your pendrive will thus behave as a microSD card inside the phone.

Compatibility is simple, if your phone has a MicroSD port that is accessible on the outer body , such that the adaptor can be inserted - you can use it (that means devices like Motorola V3 Razr that have the microSd slot behind the battery cover wont support this). If your phone has a backup to memory card option, this would mean that you can backup directly to a usb pendrive. Video downstairs

No word on pricing, availability. Shall update as soon as we hear about that.

The future of Ford's SYNC starts on June 26, future of US auto industry still uncertain

If you were around for our 2009 CES coverage you might have caught our ears-on demonstration of the future of Ford and Microsoft’s SYNC technology, which delivered traffic, directions, and weather over a Bluetooth-tethered handset — no monthly fee or even a data plan required. It was said the update would be included in 2010 Fords, which is still true, but owners of older models can also get in on the fun with an update coming early next week (installable via thumb drive). That’s hot, but even hotter is talk of what’s planned for the next update: internet radio, and Pandora is on the short list for hopeful inclusion. Have you streamed in a Ford, lately?

The Palm Pre Arrives June 6th at Under $200

Palm Pre If you are like some of my co-workers you are dusting off your pop-up tents and sleeping bags ready to wait in line, but where? Sprint has announced that the Palm Pre will be available at Sprint, Best Buy, Radio Shack and select Wal-Mart stores starting June 6th. That’s a good distribution starting point. And at a reasonable $199.99 (after rebate and 2 year service contract).

The Palm Pre will also provide access to exclusive content on the Sprint Now Network which include Sprint Navigation, Sprint TV, and NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile Live.

Though geeks are a buzz about the Palm Pre’s arrival, it has some stiff competition coming up in the summer months with the Nokia N97 NAM release June 2, and the likely announcement of the next gen iPhone. My wallet is already burning.

Find out more from the official Palm website.

ORP beta released, brings PS3 Remote Play experience to your PC or Mac

Sure, the catalog of compatible games hasn’t been as hefty as we’d like, but Sony has done quite a bit right with its PlayStation 3 / PSP Remote Play feature. Modder Dashhacker (with special thanks to noted PSP hacker Dark_AleX, among others) has released Open Remote Play v1.1 beta, which lets you take that same Remote Play experience onto your Windows PC or Intel-based Mac. The caveat here is that you’ll still need a PSP handy to set up the application, so don’t go thinking you can bypass the portable altogether. The OS X version apparently works well, but Windows users may ample bugs — it is beta, after all. We haven’t had a chance to try it ourselves yet, but don’t let that stop you from beating us to the punch — just let us know what you think. Alternatively, you can peruse video of it in action after the break.

MSI Wind U200 gets the hands-on video treatment

We already got a pretty good look at MSI’s new 12-inch Wind U200 at its debut at Computex in Taipei, but the folks at NewGadgets.de have had a chance to spend a bit more quality time with the not-quite-a-netbook, and they’ve thankfully provided a hands-on video (in both English and German no less). While they aren’t offering much in the way of actual impressions just yet, they do provide a fairly thorough overview of the device, and even discover a working SIM card slot in the battery compartment, along with a mysterious rubber plug on the side that may or may not actually conceal something. Head on past the break to check it out for yourself, or hit up the link below if you’re looking to practice your German.

HTC Touch Pro2 for Sprint spotted in the wild, mid-June release?

We’ve known that a version of the HTC Rhodium / Touch Pro2 was inbound for Sprint at some point this summer (assuming no delays), but would mark the first time we’ve seen one in what appears to be finished production trim. A SprintUsers poster claims that the global roaming-capable device should be hitting retail mid-June with the portrait QWERTY Snap following in July — and yes, we’d be more inclined to ignore the noise had said poster not also provided the glorious pictures. Looking good — really good, actually — but good luck tearing any eyes away from the Pre kiosks in the stores next month, HTC.

[Thanks, David D.]

Engadget Labs: The best point-and-shoot camera for under $400

The summer looms, and so too does the summer vacation season. Despite the economy there are visions of great trips brewing in the backs of peoples’ minds, visions that will soon turn into (hopefully) great memories — and (hopefully) great pictures. Some folks wouldn’t dream of going on those trips without an SLR slung ’round their neck or hanging at the hip, but then there are plenty of others who’d much prefer something a little more pocketable. Even for aspiring photographers there are times when lugging around five pounds of glass just isn’t going to work.

There are dozens and dozens of cameras intended for casual shooters all the time or serious shooters some of the time, with models suitable for pockets of every shape and size — and for wallets of equally varying dimensions. So, let’s take a look at some of this summer’s greatest, and see which comes out ahead, shall we?
